Week 4 - Search Locations Flashcards
What type of disk storage can provide issues for imaging?
Solid state memory
What is a disk partition?
It is a region on a disk that is seperated from the other data on the disk. It can be used to help organise a disk. In windows, each partition will have its own drive letter in the file system.
TRUE OR FALSE: Images can be made of a whole disk and of single disk partitions.
TRUE, images can be made from both of these things.
What are the categories of storage space on convential devices?
Free space File storage Unallocated space File slack space Host protected area
What is free space?
Any area of the storage media that is available for the OS to use to store data. When free space is used to store data, it becomes file storage space.
What is file storage?
Area that is currently being used to store data. It may store data that belongs to existing and/or deleted files. If file storage is storing a deleted files data, it is considered free space and is marked for reuses (Though the data is still stored there until it is reused).
What is unallocated space?
Area of the storage media that is not made available to the file system. It is data that does not belong to any partition. No programs can write to this space.
What is file slack space?
File slack is the data at the end of files that is part of that file but does not contain any of the files data. It is used as a buffer for the file. File slack is created because data is stored in clusters, and the file rarely takes up the entire cluster it is allocated. The empty part of the cluster is file slack.
What is the host protected area?
Storage that is not visible to the OS or file system. It is used by various booting and diagnostic utilities. Normally it is used to store data for BIOS.
What are bad blocks?
Storage areas that are unusable for data storage. The OS renders it void for use.
