Week 4 Respiratory Flashcards
What does the respiratory system do?
Allows for breathing and the exchange of gases around the body
What does the pulmonary system do?
A portion of the circulatory system responsible for carrying deoxygenated blood away from the right ventricle of the heart to the lungs and returning to the oxygenated blood to the left ventricle.
The process of respiration involves the circulatory system. Name two processes within respiration that are dominated by the circulatory system
Transport and internal respiration
What are the four parts of the process of respiration?
Pulmonary respiration
External respiration
Transport
Internal respiration
What is pulmonary respiration?
Breathing
What is external respiration?
Exchange of gases. o2 & Co2 exchange between the lungs and the blood
What are the major structures in the respiratory system?
Nose, nasal cavity & paranasal sinuses Pharynx Larynx Trachea Bronchi & branches Lungs and alveoli
What part of the nose filters dirt and microorganisms?
Conchae
How many types of conchae are there?
3
What anatomy is part of the conducting zone?
Nose, nasal cavity, larynx & pharynx. Conducts the air. Cleanses, warms and moistens the air to make it pliable for gas exchange.
What anatomy is part of the respiratory zone?
Terminal bronchioles and down. Site of gas exchange, microscopic structures (respiratory bronchioles, alveolar ducts and alveoli)
Which nerve makes our diaphragm contract for inhalation?
Phrenic nerve
