Week 4- Respiration Flashcards
What way does air flow in regards to pressure?
high pressure to low pressure areas
Why does the air come in on an inhale?
the volume of the lungs increase, the pressure drops, so the air comes in (pressure in the lungs is lower than the atmospheric pressure)
Why does the air come out on an exhale?
the volume of the lungs decreases, the pressure increases, so the air leaves (pressure in the lungs is higher than the atmospheric pressure)
At rest is the pressure of the lungs versus the atmosphere high, low, or the same
same
what is quiet breathing?
passive
-diaphgram, intercostals, scalene
What is forced breathing?
active breathing (especially exhale) -uses accessory muscles of the SCM, pecs, serrates, and lats
What is the vital cpacity?
tidal volume + expiratory reserve volume + inspiratory reserve volume
the tidal volume is for what kind of breaking?
quiet passive breathing
what is the inspiratory volume?
extra amount you can breath in with forced breathing
what is the expiratory volume?
extra amount you can breath out with forced breathing
What is the volume amount of a tidal volume in ml
500 ml
what is the dead space/residual air?
air that will always remain even with forced breathing (keeps you alive and prevents your lungs from collapsing)
where does external respiration take place?
alveolar air and pulmonary capillary; in the lungs across the respiratory membrane
LUNGS
where does internal expiration take place?
blood and interstitial fluids exchange gases across capillary endothelium
________ binds most of the oxygen in the blood stream,
hemoglobin
