Week 4 Prunusk - Phys I Flashcards
Define the study of physiology.
How the parts of the body work together to achieve optimal functional capacity of the body.
What is homeostasis? Describe the model discussed in class.
Hold a parameter at a constant level or magnitude despite external and internal disturbance.
(external/internal change > loss of homeostasis > organism attempts to compensate >
- if compensation fails >> disease
- if compensation succeeds >> wellness)
Describe the mechanistic view of event explanation.
Describing how events happen using cause/effect.
ex. when body temperature drops below normal, a reflex pathway causes involuntary oscillating skeletal muscle contractions which produce heat.
Describe the teleological view of event explanation.
Describe why events happen: explains purpose starting with the end.
ex. shivering elevates a low body temperature
The homeostatic control system contains controlled variables. Name the 7 discussed in class.
- Glucose concentration (70-110 mg/dL)
- Electrolyte concentration (3 mosm)
- O2concentration (100 mmHg)
- CO2concentration (40 mmHg)
- Arterial pH (7.35)
- Blood volume (4-6 L) & Blood pressure (120/80 mmHg)
- Body temperature (37°C)
What is “set point”
