Week 4 INFO Flashcards
What is the study of how bodies work?
Physiology
What is transpiration?
The loss of water through leaves due to evaporation
What happens when stomata are open?
Gas exchange occurs (to get CO2) and transpiration.
What is water cohesion and adhesion?
Cohesion: Water bonds to itself (or other water molecules)
Adhesion: Water bonds to other molecules
What is the Transpiration-Cohesion Theory?
Water (and nutrients) are pulled from the roots to the xylem to get to the stomata in the leaves.
What is the Pressure-Flow Hypothesis?
-Sugar actively loaded into the phloem
-Water passively flows in by osmosis
-Pressure builds, forcing sugar to flow to the sink
-Sugar actively unleaded at sink location
What crops are valued for their sucrose?
Sugar beets and Sugar cane
What are hydroponics?
A form of agriculture where plants are grown without soil and instead placed in water supplied with nutrients
What are aeroponics?
A form of agriculture where plants are grown without soil and instead hung up and sprayed with water supplied with nutrients
What do energy carrier molecules do?
They carry energy from one molecule to another
What is the first law of thermodynamics?
Energy cannot be created or destroyed but it can change forms
What is the most important energy molecule in the cell?
ATP (Adenosine Triphosphate)
_______ ______ in energy
_______ ______ others energy
ADP, takes
ATP, gives
What is the formula for photosynthesis?
CO2 + H2O –sunlight–> O2 + C6H12O6
What occurs in the Thylakoid membrane?
chlorophyll molecules exist and sunlight is absorbed
