Basics of Cell Theory:
-The cell is the basic unit of all life
-All cells arise from other cells through cell division
What is a primary cell wall made of?
Cellulose
What is a secondary cell wall made of?
Lignin
What does the Fluid Mosaic Model contain?
Phospholipid Bilayer
What are Plastids?
Membrane-bound organelles used for storage of pigments
What does Chloroplast store? What are they the site of?
They store chlorophyll and are the site of photosynthesis
What do Chromoplasts store?
They store carotenoid pigments which make plants attractive for pollinators.
What do Amyloplasts store?
They store the starch compound
What occurs in the mitochondria?
The site of cellular respiration or energy being broken down.
What is the cellular vacuole?
A large structure in the cell that helps support the cell through turgor pressure.
What is the job of the nucleus?
It contains the chromosomes (which are what contain DNA)
What is Diffusion?
Movement of any molecule from a high concentration to a low concentration.
What is Osmosis?
Diffusion of water across a membrane.
What are passive and active transport?
Passive: Requires no energy molecules
Molecules: Require energy (ATP)
What are the different salt concentrations in cells?
Hypertonic (More Salt)
Hypotonic (More Water)
Isotonic (Balanced)
