Describe the physiologic changes in the male during the sexual response cycle

A
  1. Excitement
    - erection in response to mental imagery, visual or tactile stimuli
  2. plateau
    - testes elevated, turgor in penis increases
    - penile circumference increases
    - scrotal skin thickens
    - increases in bp, heart rate, flushing
  3. Orgasm
    - penile and urethral contractions
    - internal sphincter of bladder closes
    - prostate gland contracts, seminal vesicles contract, and rectal sphincter contracts
  4. Resolution
    - refractory period

Describe the physiologic changes in the female during the sexual response cycle

A
  1. excitement
    - pyschogenic, tactile stimuli
    - cliteris enlarges, labia swells, vaginal lubrication appears
    - uterus elevates, creates more space in vagina
  2. plateau
    - more of whats happening during excitement
    - color change in labia
  3. Orgasm
    - contractions in uterus and vagina
  4. resolution
    - returns to unexcited state
    - believed to not experience refractory period
