What are enlisted personnel E-4 to E-6 considered?
Non-commissioned officers (Petty Officers)
What are enlisted personnel E-7 to E-9 considered?
Senior NCOs or the Chief’s Mess
How are Chiefs selected?
- Promotion Board comprised of Chiefs
- Presided by a Navy Captain
Who is the CMC
- Command Master Chief
- Senior-most enlisted service member within a command
- Responsible to the CO for the overall well-being of the Enlisted crew

Five types of NEC codes
- Entry Career Field
- Rating Career Field
- Special Career Field

What is Class A school?
Provides the basic technical knowledge required for job performance and further specialized training. A NEC may be awarded to identify the skill.
What is Class C school?
Advanced skills and techniques needed to perform a particular job are taught. A NEC may also be awarded to identify the level of skill.
What is Class E school? (Education)
Designated for professional education leading to an academic degree.
What is Class F school? (Fleet)
Trains fleet personnel who are enroute to, or are members of ships’ companies. A NEC is not awarded.
What is Class R school? (Recruit)
- This is the basic school that provides initial training after enlistment, also known as ‘boot camp’ or ‘recruit training.’
- Located at Recruit Training Center, Great Lakes, IL.
What are some general requirements for advancment?
- Recommended by the CO
- E-2 and E-3 Time In Rate up to 9 months
- Be in proper path of advancement
- Fulfill special requirements (citizenship, security, etc.)
- Pass the PRT
When are advancement exams held for E-4 through E-6?
March and September
When are E-7 exams?
Annually in January
Boatswain’s Mate of the Watch (BMOW)
As the senior enlisted deck watchstander, the BMOW is charged with assisting the Officer of the Deck in carrying out the daily routine.
Quartermaster of the Watch (QMOW)
The Navigator’s representative on the bridge
Helmsman
Responsible for steering the ship
Lee Helmsman
Responsible for controlling the ship’s engines
Petty Officer of the Watch (POOW)
Similar responsibilities as the BMOW, but INPORT
