sth that helps a process to develop more quickly or more strongly (Tax cuts provided stimulus which slow economy needed.) (The stimulus that we needed to start our business came when one friend introduced us to a company which is desperate to find an IT manager for their department.)
self-centred
selfish, to pay attention only to yourself which you don’t pay attention to what happens to people around you (Having known him for years, I am totally aware of his special character in particular the fact that he’s really self-centred.)
fare
the price you pay to travel somewhere by bus, train… (How much is the railway fare?)
damp
slightly wet (It’s raining outside but not heavily so my cloth are just damp.)
stroll
to walk somewhere in a slow relaxed way (They went for a stroll in the park.) (We were strolling along, laughing and joking.) (Sometimes we decide to go strolling in park on Friday evenings.)
mind you
BE, used when saying sth that is completely opposite of what you have said, or that explains it or emphasize it (He looks very young in this photo. Mind you, it was taken years ago.)
against the grain
if something goes against the grain, it is not what you would normally or naturally do (Mary is always honest and it went totally against the grain to tell lies.) (As much rain is falling on you as if you were walking-mind you it would have gone totally against the grain)
rumble on
if a disagreement rumbles on, it continues for a long time (The row about pay is still rumbling on.)
spoonerism
a phrase in which the speaker accidentally exchanges the first sounds of two words with a funny result
