Week 4 – Compounding II Flashcards
Dimensions of classification –syntactic 1
- coordinative
a) appositional (component A, B have the same referent), e.g. maidservant
b) copulative (meaning of compound is the sum of its components A + B), e.g. timespace
c) reciprocal (two-directional relationship), e.g. Czech-English
Dimensions of classification –syntactic 2

Dimensions of classification –semantic
- regular: both pts w/ literal meaning + hidden relationship (apple tart)
- idiomatic (banana republic, bluebottle)
-hyponymic x non-hyponymic
Dimensions of classification –formal
a) standard types (proper compounds, incl. derivational)
