How do nurses help someone with a panic attack?

A

-Stay with the patient.
-Reassure them that you will not leave.
-Give clear directions – use a firm, authoritative voice (sound “in control”, reassurance OK)
-Breathing control – Exercises to decrease hyperventilation during panic attack
-Walk with pt. - move to quieter, less stimulating environment
-Short term use of Ativan may be considered (if prescribed)
-Allow person to vent feelings afterwards
