what is social anxiety disorder?
-Fear of embarrassment, humiliation & being exposed to the scrutiny of what is in other people’s minds
-Extreme shyness
-With or without agoraphobia
what is agoraphobia?
- When individuals actively avoid situations from which escape might be difficult or embarrassing or in which help might not be available if panic-like symptoms were to occur.
- so they typically don’t leave the house
How do nurses help someone with a panic attack?
-Stay with the patient.
-Reassure them that you will not leave.
-Give clear directions – use a firm, authoritative voice (sound “in control”, reassurance OK)
-Breathing control – Exercises to decrease hyperventilation during panic attack
-Walk with pt. - move to quieter, less stimulating environment
-Short term use of Ativan may be considered (if prescribed)
-Allow person to vent feelings afterwards
How can anxiety be reduced?

challenging thinking errors (CBT) distraction,
general health promotion strategies
What is the difference between anxiety and fear?
Anxiety has an unknown or unrecognized source, whereas fear is a reaction to a specific threat.

What is domestic trauma?
violence in the family or intimate partner violence
What is interpersonal trauma?
actions with the intent to hurt, harm or take advantage of another person

What is system oriented trauma?
services that are meant to help people unintentionally cause trauma or retraumatizeation
What are the three complex traumas?
- domestic violence
