Week 4 Flashcards
What are the 3 basic modalities of measurement
Self-report
Physiological measurement
Behavioural measurement
Define self-report data
Participants describe their behaviour or express opinions in interviews or questionnaires
Advantages and Disadvantages of self-report data
Advantages
- Only the individual has direct access to information about their state of mind
Disadvantages
- Participants may distort responses to please the researcher - Can also be influenced by question wording and other aspects of the situation
Advantages of physiological measures
Accurate, reliable
Define behavioral measures
Behaviours that can be observed and measured
Define categorical variables
A categorical variable (sometimes called a nominal variable) is one that has two or more categories
What are the two types of categorical variables
Nominal
Ordinal
Define nominal data
- Qualitative, descriptive, non-numerical
- Value is not organised in a logical sequence (no order is implied)
Define ordinal data
- Semi-qualitative with numerical ranking
- Difference between rankings not always consistent
Define numerical variables
numerical variable is a variable where the measurement or number has a numerical meaning.
What are the 2 types of numerical variables
Interval
Ratio
Define interval
Has no ‘true’zero
Define ratio
Has a true zero
Numbers can be compared as multiples of one a other
Ratio data can be multiplied and divided
Two types of quantitative data
Continuous
Discrete
Define continuous quantitative data
Any value between a certain set of numbers
