WEEK 4 Flashcards
What is a pitch motive?
Distinctive repeated series of pitches
What is an internal motive?
Distinctive repeated series of intervals
What is transposition?
A pitch series that reproduces the interval series of an earlier pitch series that starts on a different part.
What is pitch inversion?
A pitch series that reproduces the interval series of an earlier pitch series, BUT reverses the direction of every interval.
(Flip it upside down)
How do transposition and inversion affect grouping?
Repetition - So we hear beginnings and endings, creates continuity.
What is a diatonic interval?
Number of steps in the scale without regard to size
What is a diatonic interval motive?
A distinctive series of step sizes that is repeated
Scales are used because…
- Provide a way of measuring intervals
- distinguish between step (continuity) and change (accent_.
- Allow diatonic interval series - same step sizes but different absolute sizes.
