Week 4 Flashcards
1
Q
Oldowan tools
A
Oldowan tools are primarily simple, unifacial (worked on one side) flakes struck from a core stone. These flakes were used primarily for cutting, scraping, and chopping.
2
Q
Acheulean tools
A
Hand axe tools, sharper and more specific for hunting. Homo erectus
known as bifacial flaking, requires more planning and skill on the part of the toolmaker; he or she would need to be aware of the principles of symmetry when crafting the tool.
Acheulean tools are characterized by the production of bifacial (worked on both sides) hand axes, cleavers, and other more sophisticated implements. These tools were carefully shaped and often symmetrical.
