3600 African people were forcibly enslaved in canada and was common in New France which is what canada is now
what was the consequence of enslaving the africans
generations of these people faced discrimination in housing, employment, schools, churches, restaurants, hospitals and public transit
what happened in 1886-1996
150,000 first nations, metis and inuit people were forced to go to residential schools
what is the consequence of the residential schools
trauma of these schools and the “60s scoop” is intergenerational
these 3 groups children and youth are overrepresented in foster care system in a more subverted effort to continue systemic violence toward the indigenous people
what happened in 1881- 1947
Head tax and exclusion
17000 Chinese labourers came to work on the canadian pacific railway and head tax was introduced after the project and canada collected $23 million in head taxes and shut down doors for Chinese immigrants
What happened in 1914
Canada didn’t Komagata Maru people to land in Vancouver. many british immigrants were welcome to canada but not this ship.
it carried, 376 Sikh, hindu, and muslim passengers who were british subjects but were denied entry
what was the consequence of komagata maru
after getting denied entry and returned back to India where 19 were shot and many imprisonned
What was popular in the 1880s to early 1960s
anti-semitism was popular in canadian society, it was imposed and practiced openly without hesitation, qualification or shame
what happened in 1939
Turned away
the MS st Louis, was an ocean liner carrying 900 jewish refugees
who were all forced back to Europe
what was the consequence of Turned away
out of the 900 jews that were forced back to Europe, 40% of them died in the holocaust
What happened in 1941-1949
Canadian govt forced Japanese, (75% who were canadian citizens) into internment camps
what was the consequence of internment camps
homes, businesses and fishing boats were lost
when the war ended, 4000 people were deported to japan
what happened in 1967
canada favoured immigrants from UK and Western Europe
so in 1967 canada introduced a “fair immigration” policy with a point system but also the system favours English speaking privileged individuals who completed post secondary
