WEEK 4 Flashcards
what are the 3 factors of sound?
FREQUENCY, LOUDNESS AND WAVELENGTHS
- Sound waves enter ear canal and hit eardrum which amplifies the waves
- Eardrum vibrates from waves and sends new pressure waves to the 3 bones in inner ear
3.Ringing in ears from concert or being in loud environment are due to little hairs being pushed down, sound pressure folds them over
what is the process of listening for sound through a human ear?
frequency is measured in _______ per second?
cycles per second
we refer to _________ as frequency
pitch
how do we study the range of hearing? in what form ?
kiloherts Hz
how do we measure loudness?
10dB
the difference between 2 sounds is perceived as a factor of?
factor of 2
length of a wave in audio transmission
wavelength
higher frequency = _________ wave
lower frequency =____________ wave
higher frequency = shorter wave
lower frequency = longer wave
what is the main goal of a microphone?
to convert 1 energy to another, they are transducers
3 basic mic pick up patterns:
- omnidirectional
- unidirectional
- bidirectional
directionality patterns in mics:
-picks up sound at all angles and picks up ambience
omnidirectional
directionality patterns in mics:
-has an upside down pick up pattern shaped like a heart
directional cardioid
directionality patterns in mics:
more sensitive to sound coming from one direction than another
unidirectional
directionality patterns in mics:
equal and max sensitivity at front and back, but zero at sides, good for interviews, guests for talk-shows
bidirectional
3 types of microphones:
- dynamic
- condenser
- ribbon
karaoke bar, live performance on stage
dynamic mic
great for recording vocals, acoustic guitars, not good for documentary or news production, great for a warm vintage feel
ribbon mic
good for acustic sound and vocals
condenser
- Inexpensive, can use as hammer, unaffected by change in humidity
- Don’t require internal or external power
- Don’t have high frequency response (above 10 Hz), coil requires lots of pressure
dynamic!!!
- Extended high and low frequency response, great for picking up wide range of sound
- Expensive, require internal or external power (battery or phantom power)
- Very fast frequency response, picks up everything
condenser!!!
V- ERY fast frequency response, picks up everything
- “Warm” and wide frequency response, great for recording vocals, acoustic guitars, not good for documentary or news production
ribbon!!!
If mic will be used in severe environment (rock and roll club, outdoor sound) _____________is better, good enough audio.
a) dynamic
b) ribbon
c) condenser
a) dynamic!
More controlled environments (concert hall, theater setting), _________is better especially if higher quality sound is wanted
a) dynamic
b) ribbon
c) condenser
c) condenser!
⅛ stereo mini (headphone jacks), RCA (red, yellow and white cables attached to TVs)
consumer audio connectors
XLR (ones we used in rta 104 for vox pop), ¼ balanced (adapter needed for recording rooms in RTA)
professional audio connectors
what are the 2 types of measurement tools?
- volume unit
- digital audio equipment meter
what happens if you have 2 identical sound waves playing at the same time?
sound doubles to twice as loud
