Week 4-1-2 Notes Flashcards
Aces
Adverse childhood experiences
Ale’s impact on physical health
The more aces you experience the more likely you are have negative health impacts
How do we describe the relationship between aces and its impact ot physical health
We call it a dose responsive relationship
Describe relationship that the impact of aces have on adulthood mental health
Same as physical health relationship → dose responsive & negative
2 ways aces effects childhood mental health
Effects can be localized or developmental
What are localized effects?
Short term; may only affect the behavior that is associated with the ace
ex) if a child experiences violent physical abuse then they maybe upset by a violent TV show
Developmental effects
Most detrimental; has more generalize mental health effects; ace causes the child to not be able to reach certain developmental milestones
Disorder
ex) child experiences emotional abuse → gets Anxiety → can’t for m healthy attachment
Factors that influence whether an ace has localized or developmental effects
- Is the ace ongoing or repetitive
- does the ace dramatically change the child’s primary support system such as a parent being in prison
- does the ace occur in tandem with other outside stressor such as poverty
-does the ace interrupt some crucial developmental process
Infancy ages
From birth to 2yrs. Old
Main mental illness associated with infancy
Postpartum depression → mood disorder → really only detrimental for babies when it is chronic in the mother → prolonged PPD can affect child’s cognitre/motor skills
Adolescent age range
12-18 yrs old
The ace associated with adolescence that has mental health consequences
Bullying during adolescence
ACE may impact the physiological development of the
body’s stress response systems
An example of a negatively impacted stress response system
Experience an ace → lower cortisol levels → inflammatory processes don’t shut down properly
Ace impacts emotions and….
