Week 3 - Teaching Science In Early Years Flashcards
What are materials?
Refers to all matter (solids, liquids and gasses)
Materials take up space and have mass
- an object is made up of materials
- a material is composed of substances
- a substance is composed of (contains) one or more elements (in combination)
Introduced in foundation
Foundation year focuses:
Materials have observable properties
Post humanistic science and ecological sustainability
Year 1 focus
Materials can be changed in a variety of ways
Year 2 focus
Different materials can be combined for a particular purpose
Year 4 focus
Properties and uses
Natural materials
Natural materials produced by natural processes
Rocks, water and air are natural materials
Processed materials
Processed or manufactured materials are also called synthetic materials
Absorbency
Ability of material to take in liquids or gasses
Flexibility
The ability of a material to be bent, twisted, stretched or noticed
Strength
The ability of a material to resist or absorb forces
Texture
The appearance and feel of materials - for example rough, smooth, sticky or grainy
Transparency
The ability of a material to transmit light so that objects can be seen distinctly through the material
Elasticity
Materials that have the property of recovering their shape after a force has been applied to them
How can we classify objects
We can classify by type
What are it’s properties, what do we use it for, why is that good use for that
Different types of materials:
Metals
Ceramics
Plastics
Fibres
Wood
Glass
