Week 3: Pro Taper Gold and Apex Locators Flashcards
Name the 6 files in the protaper gold system
SX S1 S2 F1 F2 F3
Before introducing the protaper into a canal what should you do?
Always ensure the file is rotating before introducing it into the canal
What motion do we use the shaping files?
We use a brushing motion as it cuts on the outstroke
Which area should we avoid/ minimise using the shaper files?
The furcation areas as that is where dentine is thinnest and weakest so can lead to a perforation
What should you remember when using the finishing files?
Do not use for more than 3 passes without cleaning debris from the files and irrigating
Before using the rotary files what use you have created?
Alway create a glide path
How do we determine the working length
- Electronic apex locator (EAL)
- Diagnostic working length radiograph
MUST DO BOTH
When can we not use the electronics pulp locators?
When the pulp chamber is not dry
When are electronic pulp tests not reliable?
When there are fillings in the tooth you are assessing (Especially metal fillings)
How do we use the apex locators?
- Connect the lip hook to the lips and the connection hook to the metal shaft of the file
- Place a 10/15 file into the canal and gently work it down into the canal until it is just through the apex (OVER)
- Rotate the file back until the EAL shows you 0 (the junction between soft and hard tissue)
- Identify an accurate reference point on the tooth and push the stopper down onto it
- Withdraw the file and measure the distance
When taking a reading with the apex locator what do take into consideration?
The working length is take as 0.5mm short of the 0 reading using the measured file length
This is to prevent damage to the apical constriction
Why do we take 0.5mm away from the working length we determined using the apex locator?
To prevent damage to the apical contraction
