Week 3- Physical Activity And Exercise; Balance And Gait Flashcards
1
Q
What is gait?
A
A person’s manner of locomotion ( the pattern )
2
Q
What is walking
A
Means of locomotion involving the use of two legs, where at least one foot is always in contact with the ground, and each leg alternately provides support with propulsion
3
Q
What are common neurological presentations of gait
A
- ataxic gait
- parkinsonian gait
- spastic gait (hemiplegic spastic gait and diplegic spastic gait)
- myopathies gait
- neuropathic (stoppage gait)
4
Q
What are the 3 essential components of walking and explain them?
A
- Propulsion
- generation, maintenance and termination of basic locomotor cycle
- patterned activation and coordination of legs and trunk to propel body in the intended direction - Postural control
- control of posture and movement in attaining balance
- maintenance of dynamic stability of moving body through the appropriate postural orientation of body segments relative to each other and environmental conditions
- overcome gravity and respond to expected and unexpected perturbations
5
Q
What is posture
A
Outcome of the overall position of joints adopted to balance skeletal segments against gravity
6
Q
What is balance
A
A state whereby the projection of the COM falls within the stability limits of the BOS
7
Q
What is postural control
A
Control of posture and movement in attaining balance
