Week 3: Learning from the Environment Flashcards
What is Learning?
Learning is an experience that results in permanent learning.
Ivan Pavlov
Ivan Pavlov was a Russian Physiologist who developed the Conditioned Reflex
“Classical Conditioning”
What is Classical Conditioning?
Classical conditioning is a type of learning process.
o Classical conditioning occurs when two stimuli are repeatedly paired.
o In classical conditioning two stimuli are paired/linked together to produce a new learned response in a human/animal.
What is Unconditioned stimulus?
This is the thing that triggers an automatic response.
What is Unconditioned response?
This is what response naturally occurs when you experience the unconditioned stimulus.
What is Conditioned stimulus?
This is the neutral stimulus.
What is Conditioned response
This is the learned response to the conditioned stimulus.
What is Extinciton?
When you begin to unlearn.
What is Generalisation?
This refers to generalising similar things and response the same way.
What is Discrimination?
This is the ability to tell the difference when something is similar but not identical.
What is Continuity (timing)?
Conditioning is strongest when the conditioned stimulus occurs just prior to the unconditioned stimulus.
What is Frequency?
The more often the conditioned stimulus and the unconditioned stimulus occur together, the stronger the conditioning will be.
What is Thorndike’s Law of Effect?
Behaviours lead to satisfying outcomes are likely to be repeated, whereas behaviours that lead to undesired outcomes are less likely to recur.
What is Operant Conditioning?
Operant Conditioning is a type of learning in which the consequence of an organism’s behaviour determines whether it will be repeated in the future
What is Reinforcement?
Reinforcement is more effective at promoting learning than punishment.
