Week 11: Does everyone experience the same emotions? Flashcards
What are Emotions?
Emotion is a complex state of feeling that results in physical and psychological changes that influence thought and behaviour.
What does the Family System Theory propose?
Family System Theory is a theory of human behaviour that defines the family unit as a complex social system. Members of the family interact to influence each other’s behaviour.
What does the Olson’s Family Circumplex Model propose?
The Family Circumplex Model focuses on three dimensions of marital and family systems:
o Adaptability/Flexibility
o Cohesion
o Communication
What is Schizotypy?
Schizotypy is a personality trait that portrays psychosis-like experiences in the non-clinical range.
What is the response to criticism in people with Schizotypal traits in an fMRI examination?
o Left middle frontal gyrus is activated in both individuals with high and low Schizotypy.
o Middle frontal gyrus is involved in emotional regulation.
o Greater top-down processing and regulatory effort needed to reduce the impact of criticism
What is the response to praise in people with Schizotypal traits in an fMRI examination?
o Individuals with Schizotypal traits showed lower rewards responsiveness.
This suggests reduced capacity of the high Schizotypal group to elevate mood in response to reward.
What happens when an individual experiences rejection?
Experiencing rejection activates the Dorsal Anterior Cingulate Cortex (dACC).
What happens when a Schizotypyal patient experiences rejection?
o They have altered ways of perceiving rejection cues to minimise distress.
o They feel less social pain from rejection because they are acclimatised.
