Week 3: layers of the Epidermis Flashcards
stratum lucidum
2nd layer under stratum corneum, clear layer
not present in all animals, but when present, its found in areas of high wear and tear (foot pads)
stratum corneum
superficial layer
consists of layers of dead, highly keratinized, flattened cells
also called the HORNY layer
stratum granulosum
3rd layer under the stratum lucidum
contains keratin granules
stratum spinosum
4th layer under the stratum granulosum
thickest layer in hairless, and high wear and tear areas
also called the PRICKLE or SPINOUS LAYER
Stratum basale
5th, deepest layer
continually multiplies to replace cells lost from the surface
keratinization

happens in the stratum spinosum layer
Desquamation
process in which cell organells gradually dissolve
happens in the stratum spinosum layer
cuboidal
cubelike cells arranged in rows
found in the stratum basale layer
