Week 3 key terms Flashcards
What is the central nervous system?
The portion of the nervous system that includes the brain and spinal cord
What is White matter?
Pale coloured layer tunderneath the cortex that largely consists of axons and White myelin sheath
what is gray matter?
Areas of the brain that are dominated by cell bodies and devoid of myelin
What is the cortex?
Outer surface of the brain
what does the cortex consist of?
gyri
What is gyrus?
A ridged or Raised proportion of a convoluted brain surface
What is sulcus?
A furrow of a convoluted brain surface
What is the fissure?
Grooves in the cortex
What is the key functionS of the frontal lobe? (4)
Planning
Decision-making
!Language
Emotion regulation
What are they functions of the parietal lobe? (3)
Attention
Spatial Perception
Number processing
What are the key functions of the temporal lobe? (3)
Auditory processing
Memories
Language
What are the key functions of the occipital lobe?
Vision
What is the Corpus Callosum?
The main band of axons that connect the 2 cerebral hemispheres
What does dorsal mean?
Top of the brain
What does ventral mean?
Bottom of the brain
What does superior mean?
top of the head
What does inferior mean?
bottom of the head
What does anterior mean?
Toward head end of lrganism
What does posterior mean?
Toward the tail end of an organism
What is the coronal plane?
The division of the brain into front and backparts
What is the sagittal plane?
The division if the brain into right or left portions
what is the horizontal plane?
The division of the brain Into upper and lower parts
What are meninges?
Protective membranes between the brain and skull
What are ventricles?
Fluid filled cavities in the brain
What are the parts to the forebrain? (2)
Diencephalon
Telencephalon
What are the functions of the midrain?
1- acts as a stop on the route from sensory organs to the brain
2- Motor control
What are the functions of the hindbrain?
Controls breathing, heart rate and motor control
What are they areas in the hindbrain? (3)
Cerebellum, pons, medulla
What is the telencephalon made up of? (3)
Basal ganglia, cortex and Limbic system
What is the diencephalon made up of? (2)
Thalamus and hypothalamus
What does the Limbic system do?
Play a crucial role in memory and emotions
What is basal ganglia?
A group of forebrain nuclei located deep within the cerebral hemisphere
What does basal ganglia do? (3)
Controls voluntary motor control, Learning and memory
Where is the cerebellum?
In the hindbrain (back) dorsal to the pons
What is the function of the cerebellum?
Involved in central regulation of movement
