Week 3: CVS - The Blood Flashcards
What are the 3 types of plasma proteins?
Albumins - help maintain blood osmotic pressure
Globulins - antibodies, immunoglobulin
Fibrinogen - important in blood clotting
What contains a leukocyte?
Eosinophil Basophil Neutrophil Monocyte T Lymphocyte B Lymphocyte
What are the functions of leukocytes?
To prevent/fight pathogens or other foreign substances that enter the body.
What are T lymphocytes?
Attack viruses, fungi, cancer & some bacteria
What are B lymphocytes?
Destroy bacteria and inactivate their toxins
What are natural killer cells?
Attack a wide range of infectious microbes and certain tumour cells.
What is haematocrit?
The percentage of blood volume occupied by erythrocytes usually 45%.
Which blood type can be given to people with type AB blood?
A, B, AB, or O
What is the extrinsic pathway?
Rapid
Tissue factor leaks into blood from damaged tissue
What is the intrinsic pathway?
Slow
Activators are within the blood. Endothelial cells become roughed and blood contacts collagen fibres below.
What is embolus?
A blood clot, debris, air bubble transported by the blood stream
What is thrombosis?
Clotting in an unbroken blood vessel
What is serum?
Plasma minus clotting proteins
What is fibrin?
Insoluble protein fibres forming a network that traps formed elements of blood during clotting
What is fibrinolysis?
Dissolution of fibrin
