Week 3 - Cranial Nerves Flashcards

1
Q

glossopharyngeal nerve CN IX

A

SVA and GVA fibers - posterior pharynx, posterior 1/3 tongue, carotid sinus and body (at common carotid bifercation) with cell bodies in ganglia of glossopharyngeal nerve; SVE - cell body in nucleus ambiguus with motor to stylopharyngeus, associated with 3rd pharyngeal arch, afferent gag reflex

Q

vagus nerve CN X

A

SVA and GVA - larynx sensation and taste with cell bodies in vagal ganglion, SVE - cell body in nucleus ambiguus to pharyngeal and laryngeal muscles, associated with 4th and 6th pharyngeal arches, efferent gag reflex

Q

pterygopalatine ganglia

A

parasympathetic from superior salivatory nucleus -> facial nerve -> greater petrosal nerve (joins with sympathetics from deep petrosal nerve) -> nerve of pterygoid canal -> pterygopalatine ganglion -> lacrimal gland + nasal mucosal glands + palatine glands

Q

submandibular ganglia

A

parasympathetic superior salivatory nucleus -> facial nerve -> chorda tympani -> joins lingual nerve (branch of V3) -> submandibular ganglion -> submandibular glands

Q

sympathetic to facial glands

A

ventral horn spinal cord -> sympathetic chain -> superior cervical ganglion -> follows lingual and facial to submandibular glands + follows maxillary to sphenopalatine to nasal mucosal glands and lacrimal glands
