Week 1 - Cranial Nerves Flashcards
CN I - olfactory
sVA only, cell body in olfactory epithelium, through cribriform plate in ethmoid, supplies olfactory epithelium
CN II - optic
sSA only, cell body in ganglionic layer of retina, from orbit –> optic nerve –> optic chiasm –> optic tract, supplies retina
CN IV - trochlear
gSE only, cell body in trochlear nucleus, passes through superior orbital fissure, supplies superior oblique
CN V - trigeminal sVE
cell body in trigeminal motor nucleus, passes through foramen ovale (V3), supplies muscles of mastication, mylohyoid, ant. digastric
CN V - trigeminal gSA
cell body trigeminal ganglion, V1 passes through superior orbital fissure, V2 passes through foramen rotundum, V3 passes through foramen ovale, supplies face, nose, mouth, supratentorial dura
CN V - trigeminal gSA
cell body in mesencephalic nucleus, travels with V1/V2/V3, proprioception of head, TMJ, and tooth sockets
CN VII - facial sVE
cell body in facial motor nucleus, passes through internal acoustic meatus and stylomastoid foramen, supplies muscles of facial expression, stylohyoid, post. didgastric, stapedius
CN VII - facial gVE
cell body in superior salivatory nucleus, greater petrosal to pterygopalatine ganglion and chorda tympani to submandibular ganglion, supplies glands of nose, sinuses, palate, lacrimal gland, sublingual glands, glands of oral cavity
CN VII - facial sVA
cell body in geniculate ganglion, passes through internal auditory meatus to chorda tympani and greater petrosal nerve, supplies taste buds of ant 2/3 tongue and palate
CN VII - facial gSA
cell body in geniculate ganglion, passes through nervous intermedius, supplies ext. auditory meatus and skin back of ear
CN IX - glossopharyngeal gVE
cell body in inferior salivatory nucleus, jugular foramen to otic ganglion, postganglionic fibers travel with auriculotemporal nerve to supply parotid gland
