Callous
Showing or having a cruel disregard for others.
Apathetic. Careless.
Her callous personality developed after the break-up; I wish she were more caring towards me.
Capricious
Given to sudden and unaccountable changes of mood or behavior.
Arbitrary. Careless.
The capricious climate gave rise out of nowhere; most people had trouble adjusting.
Disparity
Lack of similarity or equality.
Discrepancy. Dissimilarity.
The disparity between both skittles and M&M’s lies not only in the flavor, but also in the texture.
Epistle
A letter, especially a formal or didactic one.
Letter. Note.
The epistle, Frankenstein(underlined), has become my favorite novel in the form of a letter.
Hospice
A home that provides care for the sick, especially the terminally ill, and emphasizes pain control and emotional support.
Shelter. Clinic.
The hospice took care of my grandma in her final days and the medications allowed her to leave without pain.
Impetus
A moving force; the momentum of a moving body.
Catalyst. Impulse.
The high crime rate was the impetus for the hiring of 50 new police officers in Pomona.
Moribund
Being in a dying state, near death; not progressing or advancing.
Expiring, perishing.
After losing a lot of blood, he became moribund; he did not survive the night.
Vacillate
To waiver in mind or opinion; to sway unsteadily
Alternate. Fluctuate.
Don’t vacillate too much : either you know the answer or you don’t.
Efficacy
The ability to produce a desired or intended result.
Effectiveness. Benefit.
The efficacy of the medicine was questionable after his illness persisted.
Avocation
Activity beyond a principal.
Diversion. Pastime.
I usually do my avocation after school, but lately I’ve had no free time.
