Compunction
A feeling of guilt or regret.
Scruple. Qualm.
A brutal murderer who killed without compunction continued doing so until he got caught.
Din
A loud, confusing mixture of noises that last for a long time.
Babel. Blare.
Despite having acute hearing, the conversation was imperceptible above the din in the restaurant.
Edict
An official order given by a person with power or by a government.
Decree. Directive.
The government issued an edict banning all drones.
Indiscretion
An act or remark that shows a lack of good judgement.
Familiarity. Imprudence.
A single indiscretion can get someone kicked out of an exclusive club.
Perquisites
A privilege, gain, or profit incidental to regular salary or wages.
Gratuity. Tip.
Among many others, using the company jet is a perquisite of the job.
Sepulcher
A place of burial.
Tomb. Grave.
Without the lamentation of death, a sepulcher would just be another hole in the ground.
Suppliant
A person making a humble plea to someone in power of authority.
Supplicant. Beggar.
Despite being arrogant, the suppliant put aside his pride and asked for a second chance.
Tumult
A state of noisy confusion or disorder.
Corroboree.
Clamor. Pandemonium.
Against all odds, the serenity of church was able to overcome the tumult of destruction going on outside.
Marauding
To roam about and raid in search of plunder.
Pillaging. Robbing.
Marauding and plundering away, the Vikings robbed their way to power.
Brazen
Done in a very open way without shame.
Bold, impudent.
After kicking the innocent dog, the brazen boy continued strolling carelessly across the park.
