week 3: cognitivism Flashcards
cognitivism
emphasizes the role of mental processes, mind as an information processor and memory is important
dual store model
Sensory Memory: holds information from the senses for a very short duration
short-term memory: It has a limited capacity and duration Rehearsal can transfer some of the information to long-term memory.
long-term memory: the ability to store a wide range of information.
Retrieval is the process of recalling information from long-term memory back into working memory for use.
levels of processing
This theory suggests that the depth (or “level”) at which information is processed during encoding has a significant impact on its later recall
memory palace (loci method)
This is a mnemonic device that involves associating the items to be remembered with specific locations along a familiar route or within a familiar place.
state dependency
is a phenomenon in which memory retrieval is influenced by the physiological or psychological state that a person is in during learning and at the time of retrieval
flashbulb memories
exceptionally vivid memories which are resistant to forgetting over time
