Week 3 - Auxin Flashcards
What does Auxin/IAA do?
stimulates elongation, promotes root growth (in absence of cytokinins) and regulates the development of fruit
What are synthetic auxins used as?
dicamba is used as herbicides
Phototropism?
Auxin causes a plant to bend towards the light stimulus it does this by promoting growth on the shaded side of the plant causing it to bend
the steps auxin does to increase the extensibility of the cell wall?
- original cell
- increases in wall enxtensibility and reduction in turgor
- water uptake
- increase in cell volume
- wall becomes rigid and turgor pressure increases
- wall thickens
Apical dominance
the ability of a terminal bud to suppress development of axillary buds
Gravitropism
Gravity pulls special organelles containing dense starch grains to the low points of cell, uneven distribution of organelles may signal the cells to redistribute auxin
