WEEK 3: ATTITUDES Flashcards
why is studying attitudes important?
the way people evaluate their social world has important consequences for their relationships with and actions towards others.
also attitudes guide decisions we make
how can attitudes be measured?
Likert scales
semantic differentials
implicit attitudes test
what are some of the factors that make attitudes a better predictor of behaviour?
specific attitudes are better than general attitudes.
strong attitudes better than weak ones
give an example of another variable that effects behaviour rather than our attitudes
we think others will like our behaviour if they are of that attitude.
explain the theory of reasoned action/planned behaviour
our attitude and subjective norm make up intention which leads to behaviour
tell me about the implicit attitudes test darling
shows implicit attitudes and strength of association.
speed at answering different trials shows implicit attitudes (i.e.) if i answered faster on “good” and “me” compared to “me” and “bad” that shows a higher implicit self-esteem.
tell me about the elaboration likelihood model
when issue involvement is low, peoples attitudes are swayed by characteristics of source (i.e.) expert or not.
when issue involvement is high, attitudes are swayed by argument quality.
what is cognitive dissonance theory?
when’s peoples attitudes and beliefs don’t align so they experience dissonance and either change their attitude or behaviour so they are now align.
give an example of a study measuring implicit attitudes
Freis et al.= will people choose choc or fruit under either low or high cognitive load. low cog- explicit attitude, and vise versa.
