Week 3: About Drugs Flashcards
Altered state develops when person cannot stop a certain drug without suffering withdrawal.
Physical Dependence
A profound emotional or mental need for the repetitive use of a drug. Person becomes preoccupied and feel they need it to maintain a psychological well-being. Hard to quantify
Psychological Dependence
Physical or psychological symptoms resulting from stopping the use of a drug - vary according to specific drug, length & amount of us
Withdrawal
When increasingly larger doses are required to get the same (optimal) effect OR the same dose elicits a diminished effect
Tolerance
Diminished response to a drug because of prior use of a different drug
Cross-Tolerance
One drug enhances the effect of another. Combined effect is greater than effect of each drug on its own.
Synergism
One drug decreases the effect of another. Combined effect is less than that of each drug on its own.
Antagonism
The method used to ingest the drug (oral, through the skin, smoking)
Route of Administration
Inhalation > (or <) injection > oral > subcutaneous
5 sec 15 sec 30-45 minutes
Measure of drug’s tendency to bind to a receptor
Affinity
Tendency to activate the receptor
Efficacy
User’s state of mind at the time of use
Set
Physical environment at the time of use; differences in set and setting may account for different experiences/reactions to the drug. Ex: “bad LSD trip”
Setting
Process & actions that occur when drugs are taken into the body and absorbed into the bloodstream
depends on route of administration, dose, and form of drug
Absorption
happens via bloodstream; takes ~ 1 minute to circulate throughout body
Distribution
happens via kidneys/urine, lungs (breath), feces, skin
Elimination
