- Serious zoological draftsman as well as writer of silly limericks and illustrator of absurd creatures
- Wrote and illustrated The Book of Nonsense, a revolutionary children’s book after getting to know children on the estate of the Earl of Derby who hired him and writing them poems and making drawings
- suffered epilepsy, asthma and chronic bronchitis as a child and as a result was very withdrawn and private

- lost work due to impersonators of her work
- had to support both herself and her family, never became really wealthy because of this

The Arts & Crafts Movement
Flourished between 1860-1910, continuing into the 1930s
- Highly influenced by the Pre-Raphaelites, especially Dante Gabriel Rossetti, and led by William Morris
- Believed in honest craftsmanship over industrialism. Influenced aspects of design not only in illustration, but also in typography, architecture, textile, furniture and printing, along with championing social and economic reform.
