Week 3 Flashcards
Difference between contralateral and ispilateral?
Contralateral = info received from opposite side of body creates action on the other. left effects right, right effects left.
Ipsilateral = info received in brain from same side of body
Where is the Anterior part of the brain?
toward the front
Antlers (coming out of eyes)
Where is the Posterior part of the brain?
towards the back
think: Post/past
Where is the medial part of the brain?
middle
Where is the Lateral part of the brain?
Towards the sides
Where is the dorsal part of the brain?
Top front
Where is the Ventral part of brain?
towards the bottom
underbelly of the brain
Transverse
Horizontal plane
Sagital plane
Analogies
Transverse - carrot chopping - through the middle from the top
Horizontal - Subway - cuts on side
Sagital - hot dog - cut through middle
carrot, subway, hotdog.
What is a group of Axons in the CNS called?
Tract
What is a group of cell bodies in CNS called?
Nucleus
What is a group of axons in peripheral NS called?
Nerve
What is a group of cell bodies in PNS called?
Ganglion
what are the sulci (sulcus)?
Valleys e.g. central sulcus
Fissures - Longitudinal, lateral
in brain
What are the gyri (Gyrus)?
Bumps of brain
What is in the cerebral cortex? (whole brain/lobes)
frontal lobe
Parietal Lobe
Temporal Lobe
Occipital Lobe
What does the parietal lobe do?
body sensations, primary somatosensory cortex
What does the frontal lobe do?
primary motor area, decision making process, speech production, planning, impulse control, motivation, inhibition
What part of brain is speech production in?
Brocca’s area
What does the temporal lobe responsible for?
primary auditory cortex, hearing, speech, comprehension, relay centre
What is the occipital lobe responsible for?
Vision
Where is the motor cortex located?
front, middle, cut like a carrot
where is the somatosensory cortex located?
back, middle, cut like a carrot
Where are the lateral ventricles?
middles, going out to the sides
Which part of brain can be cut to treat epilepsy?
Corpus Collosum
What does the corpus Collosum do?
relays info between hemispheres
What does the anterior commissure do? And where is it located?
Connects the temporal lobes
located front middle
what is the endocrine system responsible for?
hormone secretion
What is the job of hypothamus?
feeding, fleeing, fighting and fucking
what gland does the hypothalamus regulate?
The pituitary gland
What does the pituitary gland look like? Where is it located?
Looks like a sack, just behind the nose
What does the Pituitary gland do?
The master gland - produces hormones that influence secretions of the thyroid, pancreas, adrenals & gonads. Also secretes growth hormones
What does the Thyroid do?
produces hormones that regulate metobolic rate
What do the adrenal glands do?
Controls salt & carbohydrate metabolism, secretes hormones active in arousal & sleep
What is the pancreas?
produces insulin & glucose to control sugar metabolism
What are the gonads?
Ovaries & testes.
In what system is the pituitary gland and what does it do?
In the Endocrine system -regulates a bunch of the hormone systems.
