Week 3 Flashcards
What is normal ventilation?
Inspiration and expiration of air to and from the lungs.
What are the 4 stages of the respiratory cycle?
Inspiratory flow, inspiratory pause, expiratory flow, and expiratory pause.
During the pause phase does gas exchange occur?
No
What creates negative pressure?
Downward movement of the diaphragm.
What is hypoxemia?
A partial pressure of oxygen in the atrial blood of less than 80 mm Hg.
What indicates severe hypoxemia?
PaO2 of less than 60
What can nasal catheters and prongs commonly used for?
Oxygen compromised animals and long term therapy
How can you make an oxygen collar with an E collar?
Tape the oxygen tube to the base of the collar and clear plastic wrap in front of the collar.
What do you need to change 21% oxygen to?
40-50%
What is mechanical ventilation?
The act of controlling breathing by using a machine.
What does mechanical ventilation do for the lungs?
Provides positive pressure.
What is the depth of ventilation?
How much volume of air you are breathing in a minute.
When should you ventilate?
If the patient does not have the muscular ability to control breathing.
How must the animal maintain stable oxygen saturation?
By moving oxygen from the lungs to the tissues.
What is the best indicator of oxygen therapy effectiveness?
Atrial blood gases.
What happens when hypoxia increases?
The work of breathing increases
What is an advantage to silicone tubes?
They cause minimal impedance of capillary blood flow
What is controlled ventilation?
The total control of all ventilatory activity.
What is assisted ventilation?
The intermittent control of ventilation.
What is positive end expiratory pressure (PEEP)?
Elevated pressure maintained in the lung during mechanical ventilation.
What does PEEP prevent?
Atelectasis
What is continuous positive airway pressure?
Maintaining end expiratory pressure above ambient pressure during spontaneous breathing.
What is continuous positive pressure ventilation?
Applying positive pressure with every breath.
How does a pressure cycled ventilator work
Applies pressure until the set pressure is met then shuts off.
How does volume cycled ventilators work?
They stop when the volume is reached.
What is time cycled ventilation?
Stops the inspiratory phase after a period oof time.
