How do you work out the mode?
The mode is the most frequently occurring score
What type of mode is this?
1,3,3,3,2,4,5,6,5,3,1
Unimodal (one mode)
What type of mode is this?

Bi-modal (two modes)
What type of mode is this?
1,1,2,2,3,3,4,4,5,5,4,6,8,6,5
Multi-modal (any mode more than 2)
What are the advantages of using the mode?
- Not affected by anomalies
- Can be applied to non numerical numbers
What are the disadvantages of using the mode?
- There can be more than one mode or no modes
- IT completely disregards all other scores
How do you work out the mean?
Mean = (sum of all values) / (total number of values)
What are the disadvantages of using the mean?
Can be influenced by extreme results
What are the advantages of using the mean?
Takes into account all the scores
How do you work out the median?
Middle number when the numbers are placed in order
(total + 1) / 2
What are the advantages of using the median?
Relatively unaffected by extreme results
What are the disadvantages of using the median?
They are less representative for datasets with no outliers
What are the 3 measures of dispersion?
Range, variance, and standard deviation
How do you work out the range?
The largest number - the smallest number
What is a limitation of using the range
It does not indicate the data in-between the minimum or maximum number. It also can be inaccurate if you have extreme results
