Week 22 - Neck & Salivary Glands Flashcards
Which nerve provides parasympathetic innervation to the parotid gland?
Parotid = Glossopharyngeal nerve (CN IX)
Submandibular & Sublingual = Facial nerve (CN VII)
Between which to cartilaginous landmarks will you identify the cricothyroid membrane?
The cricothyroid membrane was identified between the inferior border of the thyroid cartilage and superior border of the cricoid cartilage.
What muscle separates the anterior and posterior triangles of the neck? What is its motor innervation?
The neck region is divided into triangles to compartmentalize the contents. The sternocleidomastoid muscle divides the neck region into posterior and anterior triangles.
SCM = Accessory spinal nerve (CNXI)
Which answer correctly states contents of the carotid triangle?
- a) Common carotid bifurcation, vagus nerve, hypoglossal nerve, internal jugular vein, lymph nodes
- b) Common carotid bifurcation, vagus nerve, hypoglossal nerve, external jugular vein
- c) Brachiocephalic trunk, vagus nerve, hypoglossal nerve, internal jugular vein, lymph nodes
- d) Common carotid bifurcation, vagus nerve, hypoglossal nerve, brachiocephalic vein, lymph nodes
- e) Brachiocephalic trunk, vagus nerve, accessory nerve, internal jugular vein, lymph nodes
a) Common carotid bifurcation, vagus nerve, hypoglossal nerve, internal jugular vein, lymph nodes
Carotid Triangle - Boundaries:
- Superior – posterior belly of the digastric muscle.
- Lateral – medial border of the sternocleidomastoid muscle.
- Inferior – superior belly of the omohyoid muscle.
The main contents of the carotid triangle are the common carotid artery (which bifurcates within the carotid triangle into the external and internal carotid arteries), the internal jugular vein, and the hypoglossal and vagus nerves.
Explain where you would locate the jugular venous pulse on inspection of the neck.
