What is delegation?
a transfer of responsibility that gives a competent individual the authority to preform a selected nursing task in a specific situation
Why do RN’s delegate?
for patient care to be completed in a safe and timely manner, it is sometimes necessary for the nurse to delegate task to other health care providers
Who can you delegate to?
- UAP ( unlicensed assistive personal )
- LVN: (licensed vocational nurse )
What are some things RNs CAN NOT delegate?
assessment, planning, evaluation ( nursing process), accountability, patient education, any task requiring clinical judgement, critical thinking, any firsts ( first time getting out of bed, first dressing change)
Who is responsible for the task when the RN delegates it to the delegatee?
- The RN is responsible for the task when delegated
- If the delegatee does not preform the task satisfactorily, the RN must demonstrate how to do it
- The RN must follow up with the delegatee and ensure that the task was completed and that it is documented
How do you decide what can be delegated?
- predicatability of the outcome
- potential for harm

- need for problem solving
- level of interaction with client
What are the five rights of delegation?

Explain right supervision and evaluation
monitor performance and intervene if necessary and provide feedback
can a delegatee redelegate a task?
the person to whom the assignment was delegated cannot delegate to someone else. if the delegatee cannot preform the task, must inform the RN
How do you give feedback when something you delegated has not been done or done well?
if the delegatee does not preform the task satisfactorily, the RN must demonstrate how to do it correctly
When a nurse floats to a different unit what it the first thing he/she should do before taking the shift report
the nurse should explain their skill set and what it is they can or can’t do or what they feel comfortable in doing as well
