WEEK 2 - STANDARD PRECAUTIONS AND TRANSMISSION-BASED PRECAUTIONS Flashcards
WHAT IS STANDARD PRECAUTIONS?
- Work practices that apply to everyone, regardless of their infectious status to ensure a basic level of infection prevention control.
- First line approach to infection prevention and control in the healthcare environment to minimise the risk of transmission of infections agents from person to person.
- Examples: Hand Hygiene, Use of PPE when at risk of body substance exposure,
WHAT IS TRANSMISSION-BASED PRECAUTIONS
- Used in addition to Standard Precautions for clients with known or suspected infections that are spread in one of three ways:
- Contact
- Droplet
- Airborne
- Are recommended as additional work practices in situations where standard precautions alone may be insufficient to prevent transmission.
- Example, Room isolation, PPE

· If there is a risk of contamination with blood, body substances, secretions or excretions
WHAT IS PPE FACE MASK USED FOR?
- Prevents transmission of disease.
