What are the social determinants of health
Factors that impact an individual’s health/wellbeing that is often outside of their control. (includes income, employment, environmental conditions, social isolation, etc.)
what is the most influential social determinant of health? explain why
Income
because you need money to afford adequate housing, food, schooling, etc.
What is the infant mortality like in the poorest 20% of neighbourhoods than the richest 20% in Canada?
Infant mortality is 46% higher in the poorest neighbourhoods than the richest
In London, what type of people are most at risk from having income and education issues?
- lone parent families (particularly lead by females)
- children and youth
- people with disabilities and mental health issues
- elderly
- LGBTQ
- indigenous peoples
- newcomers
- ethnocultural/ethnoracial groups
- the working poor
What does London’s income look like by the numbers?
The total population in London is 367,000. 62,000 are in poverty. There are 8000 kids living in poverty. The working poor is 11000
What is covered by general revenues? What must be paid for by individuals?
Covered:
- public education (K-12)
- necessary medical procedures
- libraries
Not covered:
- childcare
- post secondary education
- recreational opportunities
- resources for retirement
How should income problems be addressed in policy/what could help close the gap in poverty?
- increase minimum wage
- boost assistance for people who can’t work
- progressive taxation
- unionized workplaces
What is a basic income and how could that be a solution to solving our income problems?
- income would raise people above the poverty line
- piloted in 5 communities across Canada but Doug Ford cut the funding 5yrs ago
how does education influence health?
Statistically, people with better education have better health
an increased literacy skills increases health literacy skills
usually more/better education results in a higher income

the ability to interpret health information and use it to make improvements in ones own health
what are some factors of health literacy?
education culture language communication skills accessibility
how does early childhood development impact health?
young children have critical stages in development. If they are not getting enough nourishment or are getting too much stress that could negatively impact them in the future
fundamental in creating healthy adults:
- attachment to caregiver
- simulation
- access to quality care
- access to activities
how does housing impact health?
good housing = better health
home ownership
ownership is the biggest wealth indicators
- long life
- access to school and health care facilities (resources)
- cleaner controlled environment
