Week 2 : RMA Flashcards
What is an observation?
Observer stays away from participants being observed
What can we do about reactivity?
Participant observation
How do we fix the categorisation problem?
Inter-rater reliability
What are case studies?
Studies of one participant or a very small sample
What are some problems with case studies?
Generalisation, reproducibility, cause and effect
What are surveys?
A way to collect data
What are the types of survey?
Questionnaire, interview and diary study
What are 4 problems with surveys?
Participants memory, questionnaire validity, reactivity, comparing answers
What are some benefits of structured interviews?
easily quantified, all topics covered, comparable across participants
What are some costs of interviews?
Rigid structure, not adaptable, surface information
What are some benefits and costs of an unstructured interview?
B= ecological validity, real life studies, flexible
C= research bias, reactivity, lack of cause and effect
What is correlational research?
Relationship between two variable, without manipulation
What are the problems with correlations?
Direction of the relationship is unclear, confounding variables
