Week 2: Lung Distension, Pulmonary Abscess, Pulmonary Atrophy, Pulmonary Tuberculosis, Headache. Flashcards
A lung abscess is a localized collection of pus within the lung tissue, caused by an infection. It usually results from the death of lung tissue (necrosis) due to bacterial, fungal, or other microbial infections. The abscess forms a cavity in the lung that becomes filled with infected material.
Lung abscess in Chinese medicine comes from?
Excess heat. Binding of heat and blood stasis. Heat scorches fluids to produce phlegm which obstructs the lung collaterals causing blood stasis.
What is the root cause of lung consumption in Chinese medicine?
Chronic lung yin deficiency.
What does TCM lung distention correspond to in Western medicine?
Lung distention (肺胀, Fèi Zhàng) It corresponds to chronic respiratory diseases like chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), emphysema, and chronic bronchitis.
Root cause of pulmonary atrophy?
Constant dry/heat in the lung. Heat dries moist lining of the lung, parching fluids and damaging yin.
Clinically characterized by cough, chest pain, fever, and expectoration of foul-smelling turbid phlegm or pus-blood streaked phlegm?
Lung abscess.
Toxic heat and blood stasis accumulating in the lung and subsequent ulcerations in the lung lobes and putrid blood and pus?
Lung abscess.
Chronic contagious condition clinically characterized by cough, hemoptysis, tidal fever, night sweats, and gradual emaciation in those with weak constitutions?
Lung consumption.
True or false? Tuberculosis can take place in other parts of the body, rather than just the lungs?
True - in 15-20% of active TB cases.
Example: bone tuberculosis.
Clinically characterized by chronic constant and progressive breathlessness, dyspnea, wheezing, and cough?
Lung distention.
Clinically characterized by cough, hemoptysis, coughing of sputum mixed with pus and blood, dyspnea, and gradual emaciation?
Lung atrophy.

If a headache doesn’t improve or deteriorate after an acupuncture treatment, what other disease could be considered?
Diseases in the skull.
Where is a yangming headache?
Forehead.
Where is a shaoyang headache?
Lateral side of the head.
