Week 2 Chptr. 33 Salivary Glands Flashcards
Parotid Gland
• Located on surface of masseter muscle behind the ramus of mandible
• Composed of grape like clusters of cells
• Secrete into tubes leading into oral cavity
• Secrete a thin, watery serous secretion
• Is largest of all the glands
• Only produces 25% of total resting salivary volume
• Duct opens into the oral cavity opposite the maxillary 2nd molars
• Stenson’s duct
• Mumps is the viral infection of the parotid gland
• Causes pain during secretion

Submandibular Gland
• Also called submaxillary gland
• Below body of mandible and wraps around the mylohyoid muscle in the neck
•Produces 60-65% of resting saliva
• Mixed gland - serous and mucous cells (thicker and stickier secretion)
• Duct opens in sublingual caruncle at the base of the lingual frenum in floor of mouth

Sublingual Gland
Sublingual Gland
• Anterior floor of mouth, next to mandibular
canines
• Smallest of the 3 pairs of glands
• Produces 10% of saliva
• Mostly mucous cells with some serous cells
• More viscous
• Opens in submandibular duct in sublingual fold (close to canines)
• Surrounded by minor sublingual glands
• Secretion of this gland is even more viscous than that of the submandibular gland.
• It has 1 major duct, and several smaller ducts, which open in a line along the fold of tissue beneath the tongue. This fold of tissue is known as the sublingual fold. ( “Feel it under your tongue”)
