Week 1 Oral Cavity Flashcards
Oral Cavity
n It begins at the lips and cheeks and extends posteriorly to the palatine tonsils, or tonsils
• The tonsils lie on each side of the throat between 2 folds of tissue, 1 in front and 1 in back- called the tonsillar pillars
2 divisions of oral cavity
2 divisions of the oral cavity
(i) Vestibule: space that exists between the lips or cheeks and the teeth
(il) Oral cavity proper: area surrounded by the teeth back to the palatine tonsils
#This includes the floor of the mouth, hard and soft palates
The Vestibule
Lips:
Vermillion zone:
The Vestibule
Lips: junction between skin of face and oral cavity
Vermilion zone: transitional zone of reddish tiss between the dry skin of the face and moist mucos of the oral cavity (lips)
Vermillion Border
Vermilion border: outlines the vermilion zon (cold sores, herpesvirus, commonly appea along this border)
Philtrum
Philtrum: small depression at the midline of the upper lip (cleft lip may be formed at the lateral junction of the philtrum)
Mucobuccal fold
Mucobuccal fold; the point where the lips/cheeks turns to go toward the gingival tissue
Alveolar mucousa
Alveolar mucosa; mucosa lying against the alveolar bone, loosely attached and moveable, reddish due to many blood vessels.
Mucogingival junction; the point where
Mucogingival Junction
Mucogingival junction; the point where the gingiva becomes tightly attached to the bone
Maxillary Labial Frenum
Maxillary labial frenum: fold of connective tissue attached to the upper alveolar mucosa, more pronounced than lower frenum
If the frenum is very firm, the central incisors may not be able to penetrate it causing the teeth to be pushed aside causing a space.
Mandibulaur Labial Frenum
Mandibular labial frenum: same description as maxillary, but relating to the lower alveolar mucosa, could cause gingival recession by pulling down on the tissue when the lip is tensed
Buccal Mucousa
Buccal mucosa: loosely adherent connective tissue of the inner cheeks
Mucobuccal fold
Mucobuccal fold: fold in the vestibule where the labial or buccal mucosa meets the alveolar mucosa
Mucogingival Junction
Mucogingival junction: border between the alveolar mucosa and attached gingiva
Attached gingiva
Attached gingiva: gingiva that tightly adheres to the bone over the roots of the teeth
Most common areas where there is misplaced Sebaceous glands known as Fordyce Granules
Mucousa of the lips, cheeks, retromolar pad
