What is a primary liver tumor
cancer that is only in the liver (not very common)
Liver cancer is usually due to
Hep B, C, and Cirrhosis
Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC)
the most common type of liver tumor that can usually not be resected due to the rate at which it metastasizes
Signs and symptoms of Liver cancer
Dull continuous ache in RUQ, epigastric, or back
Weight loss, loss of strength, anorexia, anemia
jaundice if bile ducts are obstructed
ascites off portal vein is obstructed
Dx of liver cancer
Liver function labs
Imaging
Biopsy - tumor markers
Nonsurgical management of liver cancer
radiation therapy
chemo
percutaneous biliary drainage (for a blocked bile duct)
Pre op care for liver transplant
sign consent, educate, educate on what to expect post op
Surgical management of liver cancer
· Lobectomy: remove that lobe
· Cryosurgery= liquid nitrogen to destroycancer cells
· Liver transplant must be sober for 6 months
Post op nursing care of liver transplant
- immunosuppressants
- no alcohol
- monitor for signs of rejection
- complications= Infection, hemorrhage, rejection
