Week 2: AC Instruments Inspection/Testing Flashcards
The magnetic compass is required by CARS for what type of flight?
VFR/IFR
What is the vertical line on the magnetic compass called and what can it compensate for?
Lubber line and can be bended to compensate for parallax error
The earth’s lines of flux flow which way?
South to North, parallel to equator
What info do we want from the compass?
Horizontal direction towards the poles
What is the Angle of Dip?
the vertical component, angle between the earth’s surface and mag. lines of force
What is it called when the aircraft compass tips during pitch/roll?
Magnetic Dip
What is Variation/Declination?
The angular difference between magnetic meridian and true meridian at any point
What are ISOGONIC lines?
They connect the points of equal variation only when flying N to S (longitudinally)
This part of the magnetic compass has 2 long thin parallel bar magnets on a pivot
Sensing magnets
This part of the magnetic compass allows magnets to align with the earth flux lines
The Pivot
What is the purpose of the Float?
Reduce load/friction on pivot
What is the purpose of the Compass Card?
has a scale and NSEW on it
What is the purpose of the jewel?
For less friction
This part of the magnetic compass is situated with the longitudinal axis of the aircraft?
Lubber Line
This part of the magnetic compass has a CofG of float, magnet, compass card assy is below the pivot point so the assy will be pendulous on the pivot and card will be horizontal?
Horizontal Reference
