Week 2 Flashcards
What 3 things influence ventilation?
- Respiratory muscle action
- Gravity
- Intrapleural & alveolar pressure
Optimal ventilation occurs just above the basal region due to what 3 factors:
- Lung weight (relates to IP pressure)
- Partially open airways
- Tidal volume
What three factors influence Perfusion?
- Gravity
- Body position
- Arterial pressure relative to alveolar pressure
Define Shunt
- blood reaching arterial system without reaching ventilated regions of the lungs
What is Alveolar Dead space?
Regions of ventilated alveolar that are poorly perfused
What two elements comprise Physiological dead space ?
Alveolar + Anatomical dead space
List some Clinical evidence for airflow limitation: (4)
- Exploratory wheeze
- Added auscultation sounds
- Productive cough
- Thick coloured sputum
Restrictive lung disease is defined by….?
- reduced total lung compliance
Restrictive Respiratory disease have difficulty doing what?
- getting air in
Restrictive lung disease will present with a decreased ______ on spirometry
Total Lung Capacity (overall reduction)
Give Clinical evidence of reduced lung volume: (4)
- decreases basal sounds on auscultation
- CXR findings
- SPO2 levels
- pain on inspiration
What 3 factors determine WOB
- Capacity
- Load
- Drive
List 3 examples of causes that would increase load in WOB
- Airways obstruction
- Fibrosis of lung tissue
- Chest wall trauma or structure
List S&S’s of increased WOB (4)
- reported Dyspnea
- Accessory muscle use
- Increased respiratory rate
- ABG or SPO2 alteration
