week 2 Flashcards
AAC Assessment
What are 5 AAC Assessment Tools?
Social Networks, AAC Profile, Pragmatics Profile for AAC, Mosaic and the SETT Framework are some AAC assessment tools.
What is the social networks tool?
- Person Centred Planning
- Highlights role of communication partners in the interaction process
- Used to establish goals
- Based on principles of Participation Model, ICF, Communicative Competence
- Identifying Information
- Skills of individual – Language areas – Related areas – Assistive technology use
- Communication partners- 5 circles
- Methods of expression/ primary method
- Representational strategies
- Selection strategies
- Strategies that support interaction
- Topics of Conversation
What does the operational area of learning consider?
- Orientation & Awareness
- Positioning/ stability
- Mobility equipment
- Motor Movement – how will they access the communication aid?
- Cause & Effect
- Recalls symbols and their location
- Coordination and Automaticity
- AAC Navigation and Use
- Keeping system up to date.
- Visual skills, memory, attention
What does the linguistic area of learning consider?
- Expressive & Receptive language
- Communication Awareness
- Communication of Meaning
- Vocabulary
- Combining words
- Syntax, Morphology, Narrative, Metalinguistic Skills, Self-Monitoring
- Literacy skills
- Communicative intent
- Symbolic skills
What does the social area of learning consider?
- Natural Behaviours
- Interaction with others
- Interest in others
- Motivation
- Social Awareness
- Pragmatics- turn taking
- Initiating and maintaining conversations
- Turn-Taking and finishing conversations
- Using variety of communication functions
what does the strategic area of learning consider?
- Flexible to adapt communication style to situation
- Choose most suitable mode of communication
- Appropriate message selection and use
- Repair breakdowns in communication
What are some additional consideration for learning?
- Sensory impairments
- Physical and mental health
- Activities of Daily Living
- Contexts and Environments
- Personality, Preferences, Priorities
- Emotional Support Needs
- Personal history and future plans and aspirations
- Previous intervention & strategies
- Communication partner
3 factors of Single meaning pictures
One picture/symbol represents one word or phrase
- Does not require literacy
- Requires explicit teaching of pictures that are abstract
- May require large number of pictures to represent a large vocabulary
semantic compaction description and 5 factors.
Pictures take on multiple meanings, which when sequenced together, create words, phrases and sentences
- Does not require literacy
- Vocabulary is rule driven to support language development
- Small set of symbols/icons required for a large vocabulary
- Requires training and practise to learn system
- Potential for development of motor programs for practiced access patterns
alphabet based
Words are spelt using letters
- Requires literacy
- Vocabulary is not limited by program’s software
- May require larger amount of input (i.e. multiple key strokes for one word to be produced)
- Small symbol set (i.e. 26 letter symbols)
- Rate enhancement features may be available
What are some other features to consider in the primary component?
- Vocabulary: Core Vs. Fringe
- The method of utterance generation.
i. e. Spontaneous Novel Utterance Generation (SNUG) – allows individuals to access words and phrases, to spontaneously create novel messages- to say exactly what they want to say and Pre stored sentences- quick access to commonly used messages- specific topics, comments, remarks, interjections, scripts, fillers. - Linguistic/language level:
What are the different types of symbols?
- PCS
- Soft pics
- Symbol stix
- Pixons
- Compic
How do you navigate picture based AAC systems?
page navigation icon sequencing.
page navigation
vocabulary is organised in a page “tree” structure
and main page leads to various other pages or “popups”
user navigates to and from pages to locate individual words, phrases or sentences
• single meaning pictures used to represent each word
• text support can help with learning
What are the 5 types of page navigation?
- Activity
- Grammatical
- Semantic category
- Pragmatic
- Visual Scene Displays
What is icon sequencing?
Selecting 2 or more icons to produce one word or phrase. gives predictable access to a large vocabulary with a limited number of pictures. All core vocabulary is found on the main page. facilitates the learning of sequences automatically (similar to touch typing). gives tangible access to non “picture-producing” words. Semantic compaction – Minspeak
What are the different types of selection methods?
- Direct (hand, stylus, keyboard, head pointer, mouse, keyguard)
- Scanning via switches:
- Eye Gaze (i.e. megabee, tobii)
- Other (morse code)
Scanning via switches:
Methods and factors
Methods: - can be Low Tech: Partner-assisted scanning or High Tech: Built into device via switch - Pattern: linear, row-column, column-row, zones -Automatic or Step or Inverse -One or two switches Factors: -Timing - Effort - Speed (position of vocabulary) - Auditory feedback - Which switch - Position of switch
What is Dynamic assessment?
- Instructional interaction between therapist and client
- Revealing learning potential
- Not just measuring performance
- Ongoing assessment and review in AAC is part of your intervention
- Many variables can impact on performance
- AAC systems grow and change
