Week 2 Flashcards
What is shock?
inadequate tissue perfusion resulting in poor oxygen delivery
What are the four types of shock?
Cardiogenic, distributive, obstructive, and hypovolemic
Cardiogenic shock results from?
heart pump failure
Obstructive shock results from?
a physical obstruction in the circulatory system
Hypovolemic shock is a result of?
decreased intravascular volume
What is some information that supports a reason for hypovolemia?
trauma, excessive urination, diarrhea, and vomiting
What are the stages of shock?
Stage 1- compensated shock
Stage 2- decompensated shock
Stage 3- irreversible shock
What are the signs of stage 1 shock?
Tachycardia, decreased pulse quality, prolonged CRT, Pale MM, cool extremities
What are the signs of stage 2 shock?
Tachycardia, decreased pulse quality, variable CRT, “muddy” MM color, decreasing BP, obtunded mental status
What are the signs of stage 3 shock?
severe systemic hypoperfusion, therapies cease to be effective.
What are the assessment parameters for shock?
Level of consciousness, pulse, respiration, blood pressure, cutaneous, urine production
What are the categories of crystalloids?
hypotonic, isotonic and hypertonic
Lactate is converted by the liver into what?
bicarbonate
What are the 2 types of catheters?
over the needle and through the needle
through the needle catheters are used for?
jugular catheters, long term fluid or drug therapy
